Xanadu Philodendron (Thaumatophyllum xanadu)

Xanadu (often still sold as Philodendron xanadu) is a compact, landscape-ready tropical plant loved for its dense, mounding shape and deeply cut, glossy green leaves. Unlike larger split-leaf types, Xanadu stays more manageable and naturally forms a full, rounded clump—perfect for patios, entryways, and warm-climate gardens. It can also be grown indoors in bright, indirect light.

Ideal for: tropical landscape beds, borders, patio containers, pool areas (filtered light), bright indoor spaces, and low-maintenance tropical greenery.

🪴 Care & Maintenance Guide

🌞 Light

  • Best: Bright, indirect light indoors

  • Outdoors: Partial shade to filtered sun (morning sun is ideal)

  • Avoid: Harsh afternoon sun (leaf scorch) and deep shade (slower growth)

💧 Watering

  • Water when the top 2 inches of soil begin to dry

  • Keep soil evenly moist but never soggy

  • Tip: Consistent moisture + drainage prevents yellowing and root issues

🪨 Soil

  • Rich, well-draining aroid/tropical mix (potting mix + bark + perlite)

  • Containers must have drainage holes

  • Outdoors: amend with compost and ensure good drainage

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 65–85°F (18–29°C)

  • Prefers moderate humidity (does fine in average conditions)

  • Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C)

🌿 Fertilization

  • Feed every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer

  • Use a balanced fertilizer at label rate

  • Reduce feeding in fall/winter

✂️ Pruning

  • Remove yellowing/damaged leaves at the base

  • Trim to shape and keep a neat mound

  • Wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust

⚠️ Common Issues

  • Yellow leaves: overwatering or poor drainage

  • Brown tips/edges: underwatering, low humidity, or mineral buildup

  • Slow growth: insufficient light or underfeeding

  • Pests: mealybugs/spider mites—treat early if detected
